This Is How You Play
This is an activity that I have kids do at the end of summer camp. It is an easy way to motivate a lot of people to pick up a lot of trash. It's also a great way to get rid of a lot of junk by giving it to kids instead of tossing it in the garbage.
- Gather a lot of items that have been lying around your center. These are items that are semi-useful, junk or things that your center doesn't need, but kids would appreciate. Last year we gave away old maps, broken binoculars, metal poles, and artwork created by the employees.
- Explain to the kids that they could win a lot of awesome things, but they have to bid on the items using trash and things that can be recycled. They get the entire day to gather their currency. Trash items count as 1 point while recyclables get 2 points.
- Really play up the auctioneer role with phrases like, "I have 1 point, do I have 2? I have 2 do I have 3?!", or "Going going GONE! To the young lady in the pink hat." This is like 50% of the fun.
- Be sure to have a few trash counters to make sure kids have the points they claim and so the whole process seems fair.
